26 Days for Rwanda, Kilimanjaro Machame Route

Day 1:

Arrival and transfer to Gorilla hotel


Start historical-minded exploration of Kigali city with visits to landmarks from colonial, post-independence, genocide and post-genocide times i.e. Kigali Solaire, Stade regionale, Kigali Genocide memorial site where over 259,000 genocide victims were put to rest in mass graves, Dr. Richard Kandt Museum who was the first Germany explorer to settle in Kigali, Belgian camp where they killed the 10 Belgian UN soldiers who were protecting the moderate prime minister before the start of genocide etc. Transfer to Bugesera in the afternoon to visit the reconciliation village where the survivors of genocide live together in harmony with the perpetrators that killed their own families, Nyamata and Ntarama genocide churches where thousands of innocent people were butchered in the house of God.

En-route visit the Basilica of Kabgayi, the first catholic cathedral in Rwanda; Murambi genocide memorial, historical-minded exploration of Nyanza - visit the King's palace and traditional Rwanda home; the National Museum, introduction to Rwanda's kingdoms, discovery of colonial architecture, enjoy traditional dancers from the museum or the national university. Proceed to Nyungwe Forest. Overnight: - Top View Lodge.


Early breakfast at 4:30am then drive to the edge of the forest where chimpanzee trekking in Nyungwe starts. In the afternoon, visit tea plantation and factory. Overnight: - Top view lodge.


Transfer from Nyungwe National Park to Volcanoes National Park via Ngororero route. The journey takes around 9 hours but on good roads or follow the dirt bumpy road that meanders around Lake Kivu with beautiful scenery of "1000 hills and a million smiles". The drive will take more than 10 hours but it's a great drive through the remotest villages of Rwanda as you enjoy local lifestyles along the Congo-Nile trail. You will have packed lunch and enough water plus juice on the drive. Gorilla hotel.


Brief of the day: Early breakfast at 6am then transfer to the park at 6am for briefings and grouping. Option to visit Buhanga forest in the afternoon where all the Rwanda kings were initiated or Kinigi Cultural Village for traditional dances and music, bio-mimicry and traditional healing lessons.

Volcanoes National Park:

After breakfast we transfer to the park. After completing our park formalities, we are embark on a once in a life time experience of tracking mountain gorillas. Once you spot them you are allowed to spend an hour watching your closest long lost cousin. This is perhaps one of the most breathtaking wildlife experiences on earth!!! You get so close to these awesome giant primates. You stare at each other blankly not knowing who to break the long silence first. Tracking the gorillas through the light mountain forest on the slopes of the Virunga is a magical experience.

Be back at the base in time for lunch! Some gorilla families however are more elusive and tracking can take a full day, especially when it is wet and muddy. Gorilla hotel.


Return to the entrance of the Park early this morning to see the Golden Monkeys. It is now believed that they are the only feasible population of Golden Monkeys residing in Volcanoes National Park. They are beautiful and endangered primates which have become quite habituated to humans, making it possible to observe them closely. After lunch at the Lodge, transfer to Kigali for evening flight to Arusha.

Day 8: Hike Machame Gate to Machame Camp

Drive from Moshi to the Mount Kilimanjaro National Park Gate takes about 50 minutes. The journey passes through the village of Machame which is located on the lower slopes of the mountain. We depart the park gate and walk through the rain forest on a winding trail up a ridge. At lower elevations the trail can be muddy and slippery. Gaiters and trekking poles are a good idea here. We continue a short distance until we reach the Machame Camp.

Day 9: Machame Camp to Shira Camp

After breakfast we leave the glades of the rain forest and continue on an ascending path, crossing the valley along a steep rocky ridge. The route now turns west onto a river gorge until we arrive at the Shira campsite.

Day 13: Mweka Camp to Arusha

After breakfast we continue the descent down to the Mweka Park Gate to receive your summit certificates. At lower elevations, it can be wet and muddy. Gaiters and trekking poles will help. Shorts and t-shirts will probably be plenty to wear (keep rain gear and warmer clothing handy). From the gate, continue another hour to Mweka Village. A vehicle will meet you at Mweka village to drive you back to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha. Don't forget to tip your guides and porters.

Day 14: Moshi- Lake Manyara National Park

After an early breakfast you leave the hotel with picnic lunches, drive through Arusha to the Lake Manyara National park for a game drive. .Dinner and overnight at Lake Manyara’ Hotel on Full Board basis.

Day 15: Lake Manyara to Serengeti

Today we start with an early game drive en route to Serengeti. Serengeti is home of all the animals. Dinner and overnight at Serengeti Serena Hotel. http://www.serenahotels.com

Day 16: Serengeti

Day 17: Serengeti/Ndutu

Early morning game drive to Ndutu, This time of year the migration of wildebeest will be around Ndutu so you will have good game drive around, Also you will see lions, elephants, giraffes, zebras, monkeys, baboons, hippos, rhinos, antelopes and many birds and other species. Day 18: Ndutu to Ngorongoro Crater

Day 19: Ngorongoro

Afterbreakfast will descend into the crater for a wonderful game drive (with a picnic lunch) inside the Ngorongoro Crater considered as an UNESCO World Heritage Site. As very few animals migrate in and out of the crater with its 2000 ft. high walls the Ngorongoro Crater has the highest wild animal density worldwide. Among the species are lions, elephants, giraffes, zebras, hippos, flamingos, jackals, rhinos, antelopes, many birds and other species. You might expect to see the 'Big Five' in one day. Day 20: Flight to Mafia

After breakfast, you check out and drive to Arusha Airport for flight to mafia. As you arrive at Mafia Airport you will be met by our representative and driver and taken to your hotel, overnight at Butiama Beach on Bed and Breakfast http://www.butiamabeach.com

Day 21: Full day in Mafia

Excursion to Kinasi Island which is packed with numerous ancient ruins including largest ruin of the German colonial administrator; walking excursion to experience village life and activities: boat-building, sail-making, hand-manufacture of coconut coir ropes; nature walking tour to Ancient coral rock swimming pools; Picnic lunch will be offered during the day. Day 22 - 26: Mafia

Day at leisure, relax and enjoy the beaches of Mafia Island options for excursions such as Reef-walking, Nature Trail, Kayaks excursions, cycling in the village, Bird watching as well as swimming and sunbathe. Day 27: Mafia - Arusha

After breakfast you will get transfer to Mafia airport to catch your flight to Arusha then transfer from Arusha to Kigali where you can catch the international flight back home.
